About Western Hemlock
Sometimes called “the Queen of Conifers” and described as “a slender tower of lush, elegant beauty,” the Western Hemlock has purple-brown bark; glossy, deep green leaves; and a gracefully-arched leading shoot which lends the tree a singular loveliness. Western Hemlock foliage is inviting, soft to the touch, and fern-like.
This impressive tree can grow more than 250 feet tall (with trunks up to 4 feet across) and can live for more than 1,200 years. Western Hemlocks love the sun, but are very shade-tolerant also and prefer wetter sites.
